Lowthars Blade
series

Dutton Children’s Books
for ages 7-11
Synopsis:
When Kenric’s father goes missing for more than two months, Kenric vows to find him. But these are dangerous times in the land of Lowthar. Fierce Mawr hounds prowl the dark roads, and grymclaws patrol the skies. There is talk of an evil power rising in the east. Soon Kenric is plunged into a terrifying adventure and he realizes that things are worse than he ever imagined. Lord Mordig has killed the true king and seeks to rule Lowthar by forging a new blade of power. He will destroy anyone who gets in the way. Can one boy’s courage unite humans, goblins, and the Fey to fight back? And will Kenric ever see his father again?

The Lowthar’s Blade trilogy is packed with action, magic, and daring deeds. This fast-paced adventure is the perfect introduction to classic fantasy.

Praise:
"... moves smoothly from start to finish; the action is continuous without being overly violent. This is a good choice for readers not ready for Lloyd Alexander's 'Prydain' books which feature a similarly young and appealing hero."

Synopsis:
Young Kenric has helped dethrone the evil Lord Mordig and return the true king to power in Lowthar. Now the king requires Kenric to travel to Grim Wood, the realm of the hostile Fey people. He needs their cooperation in the quest for the blade of power that will protect the land. With the help of the Fey girl Linwe, Kenric tries to uncover the secrets surrounding the blade. But there is trouble everywhere they turn. Along with Book I, The Forging of the Blade, this concise and action-packed second volume of the Lowthar's Blade Trilogy forms a bridge for young readers to the classics of high fantasy.

Synopsis:
The evil warlord Mordig has escaped from his prison, and only the true blade of power can defeat him and save the land of Lowthar. The sword must be forged in goblin fires, and it’s up to Kenric to win the goblin king’s allegiance. Kenric, Linwe, and Hnagi undertake a daring mission, first into the goblin realm and then into Mordig’s own stronghold. And at last they must face him in battle to decide the fate of Lowthar. Reassuringly concise and brimming with spine-tingling adventure, the Lowthar’s Blade trilogy leads young readers straight to the heart of high fantasy.

Synopsis:
Luc Grayson is just like any other boy. He's about to turn thirteen and his body is changing. All too suddenly, he finds himself becoming faster, stronger, more aggressive. But unlike his classmates, Luc is increasingly troubled by nightmares and strange urges.
Then a stranger appears in the home Luc has shared with his Aunt Jane and Uncle Stephen since his parents died when he was three. The mysterious man claims he has come to take Luc back to his father's people. Luc is about to learn a thrilling and terrifying truth: like his ancestors, he is a shape-shifter, and on his thirteen birthday he will change form for the first time. Under the full moon, his bones and muscles will stretch, he'll drop to all fours, his mouth and nose will become a pointed muzzle with lethal fangs, and thick fur will sprout through his skin.
He will become a wolf.
Luc is dazzled by his new powers, and he realizes he has longed for the sense of family his new-found relatives—his pack—provide. But Luc has brought danger to his new community. His uncle Stephen hates and fears the shape-shifters, and now that they have taken Luc, he'll stop at nothing to see them wiped out. It will take all of Luc's abilities—wolf and human—to save his pack, and himself.

Synopsis:
Wat, the crippled, one-eyed boy is the village grunt. He means nothing to his fellow villagers, and even less than nothing to the lord and his men. While hiding from the village bullies in the nearby woods, Wat sees the lord and his men capture two young falcon nestlings from their nest. In a rare burst of courage, Wat steals the two young falcons from the lord in order to return them to the forest where they belong. Now he is hunted as an outlaw.

Fleeing deep into the forest with the falcons, Wat meets a mysterious old hermit who offers him shelter. He takes Wat in and teaches him how to care for the birds so that they may one day fly free. Wat slowly comes to realize that the old man is a wizard. The old wizard recognized something in the boy, too. He wants to help Wat come into his own powers, so that when his pursuers come, Wat will be ready.

This action-filled fantasy combines wizardry and magic and a daring animal rescue as Wat overcomes his disability and gains freedom for himself and his falcons.

Praise:

"The author successfully blends rich descriptions of the medieval world and flights of fantasy into an exciting adventure with an ending that suggests a sequel for Wat and his falcons. "
                                                                                      ~ Booklist

"The author has done a fine job of integrating elements of fantasy into a historical setting. Wat and Griswold are both interesting and appealing characters. Readers will admire the boy's bravery, and many will envy his new life in the forest world."
